MUTUAL INVESTMENT ANO PROVIDENT
CO., LTD.
Mr C MacLeod writes: -
Sir, I write in reply to a referenece to the Mutual In-
vestment and providant Company limited made by
Mr Wm E cullam in your financial columns on
Saturday October 26.
Mr Cullam happened to be mentioned in the
"Advance notice" of the company to have reported on:
an area of land at aulconbridge which it is int-
tended the company shall control: he was also men-
tioned to be a timber expert which has evidently caused
his dipleasure and I here with tender my apology as I
now recognise my mistake since the facts have been revealed.
Apparently it has been Mr Cullam's desire to expose
what he considers to be a gigantic fraud but I sub-
mit that Mr Cullam should give me permission lo
publish hiss report Then the public will not only leam
the facts, but yyill realise how much confidence may be
placed in Mr Cullam As regards the report, I take
the liberty to mention a portion of it, in order to
relieve the charge Mr Cullam's statement as regards
the quantity of timber contained on our Faulconbridge
propertj of 512 acres is as follows -"I estimate the
quantity of timber on the area of land pointed out to
nie as the field of the proposed operations to be within
three or four million feet " Will he say, instead of
"area of land pointed out to me," that it was the 512i
acres. Aa matter of fact, he only inspected a very
small portion of the area, and the time did not extend
beyond two hours. On the same ratio, should he
have insected the whole area he would probably have
arrived at a figure above -40 000,000 super feet. How
ever, It just proves how modest Is our estlmate-espe-
cally as the area now is instead of 512 acres, 1500
acres, whlch would posslhly have been noticed by Mr
Cullami had his annoyance not temporarily removed his
eyesight Another fact worthy of note is that Mr
Cullam states that there is ' blarkbean" in the variety
cf fancy wood but there Is not a stick of "blackbean"
cn the property
The estímate was arrive at with the assistance of a
report made hy John & Allan Esq , who made an ex
lhaustive examination, covering a period of two days,
against expert Cullam's two hours This estimate was
made on the original area of 512 acres, which has been
Increased to 1500 acres.
However, Mr Ctillim is not the only one antagon-
istic to Ihis, compiny, as there are several interested
in the limber trade who recognise that the success of
thils company will considerably interfere with their
present exorbitant charrges-hence their bitterness.
Directly the company- is in full swing hardwood will be
supplied at 9s 6d per hundred super feet, as against
19s 6d per hundred as at present charged
I consider now that the statement Is fully justified,
and I may statet, that the "Herald's ' reporter also ex
pressed himself as satisfied however, should Mr Cul-
lam desire to prolong this controversy, I am quite
wlling, but 1 hve no desire to waste your yaluable
spice. 1 may state that the reason his report was
mentioned was because of the extremes.
I sincerely trust that Mr Cullam's service may be
noticed by theRoyal Humane Society, and obtain its
due reward.
It appears strange policy to set Mr Cul-
lam up as an expert in the prospectus and
then to say In effect that he is no expert at
nil Doubtless i discerning public will un-
derstand
