Railway Accidcnt in Lapstone
Tunnel.
TWO TRUCKS DERAILED.
On Thursday afternoon a train of .' empties " in
charge of Guards Baker and Fryer and driven by
Drivers Fisher in the front and Squires (push-up)
was going through Lapstone tunnel when by some
means a truck went off the rails followed
shortly by another. It was not until they got
into the open that the lending driver noticed the
derailed empties "jumping "and he at once pulled
up. It was found that the trucks had run along
the sleepers which were well ballasted, all the
way ana had sustained little or no damages
although they had gone over a bridge at the other
end of the tunnel. Arrangements were at once
made to reinstate the trucks which was done
after an hour or two's delay. The reason given for
the derailment is that the line was rather slippery
and the push up engine was unable to make
headway. When she did come it was with a
rush sufficient to displace the waggons. An
enquiry is to be held.
