the proposed lapst0ne tunnel
deviation.
It is rumoured that a. survey has been mnde
q'iito recently between "Emu Plains and -Glen-
brook with the object of cutting out the present
Lanstone Hill tunnel. It will be remembered
that this tunnel' was constructed oight or nine
years ago, to avoid what was then known as the
" little Zigzag. Unfortunately, by some over
sight which has never been explained, and which
lias boon a prolific source of comment,' provision
was . only made ' for a 'single .'line. Now that
duplication all the way froln Penrith to Lithgow
has become unavoidable, it is thought that the
Commissioners prefer to construct a deviation
rather than double the tunnel. We have heard
that a satisfactory. grade, much better than the
oxisting one, has been obtained. Also that the
; proposed line leaves she present track midway
between Emu Plains and the viaduct; and again
connects with it between Glenbrook and Blaxland.
If the rumour provo true tho improvement
will certainly bo a very important one, and will
greatly facilitate the mountain traffic;
