FIVE DEAD IN
R.A.A.F. SMASH
SYDNEY, Tuesday.—l'ivc members of the R.A.A.F. were }
killed instantly this afternoon when an Air Force 'plane j
crashed at Glcnbrook, 40 mil es from Sydney, at the foot of (
the Blue Mountains. A poign ant feature of the tragedy was 1
the fact that the 'plane was bringing a sick airman from \
Parkes, who required medical attention.
A medical officer was aboard the 1
'plane ministering aid when the
'plane crashed.
Three employees of the Hotel Lap
stone who were swimming in a dam
three miles from the hotel first noticed
the 'plane flying very low in unfavour
able weather. The pilot appeared to be
losing height, when suddenly there was
a roar from the engines as if the pilot
was endeavouring to gain height, and
then the machine suddenly dived into
the ground.
The 'pljine came down between
two houses, and was completely
wrecked.
The wreckage of the machine came
to rest in the backyard of the residence
of the Glenbrook stationmaster.
Corporal Theodore Pridham, of the
R.A.A.F. station at Parkes, who is at
present at Richmond, was sent to the
scene of the tragedy to effect identi
fication of the bodies. The bodies were
removed to Richmond.
The machine was smashed to match
wood. One engine was found 150 yards
from the smashed fusilage, and caught
on fire. »
An eye witness said he saw
smoke coming from the craft while
it was in flight.
The victims were:—

RAY RAINBOW (42), single, of Double
Bay (N.S.W.).
FLYING-OFFICER HENRY THEO
DORE SKILLMAN (30), married, of
Parkes (N.S.W.).
PILOT-OFFICER JOHN IGNATIUS
NEWMAN (25), single, of Toowoomba
(Q.).
PILOT-OFFICER BAILEY MIDDLE
BROOK SAWYER (34), married, of
Parkes (N.S.W.).
AIRCRAFTSMAN RICHARD TY
SOE (23), single, of Geelong (Vic.).
Pilot-Officer Sawyer was the airman
being conveyed to Sydney, and Squad
ron-Leader Rainbow was the medical
officer. Pilot-Officer Newman was pilot
of the machine, Skillman was navi
gator, and Aircraftsman Tysoe was the
wireless operator.

An official statement issued by Air
Force headquarters to-night was: "Four
officers and an aircraftsman were killed
when an R.A.A.F. twin-engine aircraft
crashed near Lapstone (N.S.W.) about
5 p.m. to-day. All were members of the
staff of the Air Navigation School at
Parkes."
The aircraft, which left Parkes for
Mascot at 3.40 p.m., was conveying
Pilot-Officer Sawyer to Sydney for
urgent specialist medical attention. The
other passenger w&s the senior medi
cal officer at Parkes School .
"The others comprised the crew.
The cause of the accident is un
known."
SAWYER AN AMERICAN
Sawyer was an American, and was
sailing his yacht Henrietta in Aus
tralian waters when war was de
clared. He enlisted last July and was
posted to the reconnaissance school
at Laverton, Victoria, tor navigation
duty. Later he did his navigation
instructor's course and in November
was posted to. Parkes.
After he joined up he and
several other officers were aboard
the Henrietta when she went
aground off Point Cooke and be
came a total loss.
Rainbow joined the RA.A.F. medical
service last March. Alter duty al
Melbourne and Brisbane recruiting
centres he was posted to the statior
hospital at Laverton in September,
Two months later he was transferred
to Parkes, and became a squadror
leader this month.
Skillman joined as an air cadet lr
January, 1940, and did elementan
flying training at Essendon, Victoria
After he qualified he was posted tc
the general reconnaissance school
and later carried out a navigator'*
instructor's course.
He was posted to Parkes in
November as an instructor.
Tysoe was a clerk before he enlist
ed in January, 1940. He later quali
fied as a wireless and telegrapi
operator, and was posted to the al]
navigation school at Parkes.
Newman started training as a eadel
at Archerfield, Brisbane, last April.
After graduation at Point
Cooke he was poster! to Par&es
in November.
