?Plane Crash
SYDNEY, January 29. — Five R.A.A.F. men were
killed when a twin-engined plane disintegrated in the air
and crashed at Glenbrook, near Lapstone, yesterday
afternoon.
. The victims were:—
Squadron lender James M. Rainbow,
42, single, of Double Bay.
Flying Officcr Henry Theodore Skill-'
man, 30, married, of Parkes.
Pilot Officcr John Igiintius Newman,
r 25, single, formerly of Sydney and Too
woonibn.
Pilot Officer Bailey Middlebrook Saw
yer, .14, married, of Parkes.
Aircraftsman Charles Richard Tysoe,
23, single, of Gccloifg West, Victoria. x

Newman is a pilot, Skillman a naviga
, tor, and Tysoe a wireless operator.
. Near Glenbrook, In flying from Parkes,
? the machine was seen to have lost height.

ground the tanks exploded and tlie .

Tlie bodies were identified by the
frames on the clothing. Two partly
opened parachutes and three others were
iound amid the wreckage.

! Footballer
The late Pilot Officer John Ignatius
Newman was a well-known Rugby
Union footballer, beirig the captain of
the Toowoomba G.P.S. team, while h^
also represented Queensland on several
occasions some three or four years
ego, He also was a member of the
Hiridle Ridge Golf Club.
He was connected with the Defiance
1 Milling Company, of Toowoomba, and
had been a member of the R.A.A.F.
for about 12 months. He was educated
et Nudgee College and was the
^ younger son of the late Mr. and Mrs.
J. P. Newman, of Tor, Toowoomba.
His elder brother, Mr. PatricK
: Newman, resides in Sydney, and
I there are two sisters, Mesdames R.
Cattanach (Brisbane) and M. Gratten
French (Sydney)-.
Pilot Officer Newman began train*
»' ing as an air cadet at Brisbane in
April, 1940. After graduation from
? Point Cook he was posted to Parkes

Squadron Leader James N. Rainbow
Was well-known throughout Queens- .
land.
He was attached to the Creek Street
recruiting centre from March 15 to.
September 20 last year.
Squadron Leader Rainbow was medical
officer on No. 3B recruiting train and
he travelled throughout the State with
the train.. He was a Flight Lieutenant
while stationed in Brisbane. When he
was transferred to Laverton, Victoria, he
Was promoted to Squadron- Leader.
Senior officers in Brisbane paid tribute
to-day to the fine work and high
standard of efficiency maintained by
Squadron Leader Rainbow.
Two Departmental
Inquiries to be Held
The crash will b-^ investigated at two
independent departmental inquiries, it
was stated by Air Force authorities to
day.
The cause of the crash would be fully
investigated by the Court of Inquiry
constituted by the Central Area Head
quarters of the Air Force. In addition,
an inquiry would be made by the In
spectorate of the Aircraft Accidents
Branch of the R.A.A.F. Headquarters in
Melbourne. This inquiry, it is stated,
would be made by ? Group Captain
Murphy, who left Laverton in an Air
- Force plane early this morning.
Neither of the inquiries, it was stated,
would be held in public.
