'PLANE CRASH
Five Killed at
Glenbrook
TERRIFIC IMPACT
A TWIN-ENGINED 'plane col
• "*■ lapsed in the air about 4.45
p.m. on Tuesday and crashed with
tcrrific force at n, point to the
cast of Glcnhrook Park. Five
It.A.A.F. men were killed.
The plane left Parkes early in the
afternoon, the pilot being Pilot-Officer
Newman, with Flying-Officer Skillman
as navigator, and Aircraftsman Tay
lor, wireless operator.
Three-quarters of a milr/ away from
the crash parts of the machine were
found. The engines landed some dis
tance apart.
When the • 'Times" representative
arrived on the scene the police and
(he district coroner, Mr E. P. Rule,
were busy carrying out investigations.
The coroner was very helpful in vari
ous ways.
Nepean Ambulance, with Mr A. L.
Parsons in charge, was quickly on the
scene. It was much later that the
Air Force ambulance arrived.
The victims were Squadron-Leader
.lames M. Rainbow (42), single, of
Double Bay; Flying-Officer Henry
Theodore Skillman (30), married, of
Parkes; Pilot-Officer John Ignatius
Newman <25), single, formerly of Syd
ney and Toowoomba; Pilot-Officer
Bailey Mjddlebroak Sawyer (34), Mar
ried, of Parkes; Aircraftsman Charles
Richard Tysoe (23), single, of Geelong
West, Victoria.
Onlookers state that their attention
was attracted by the terrific roar of
the , plane engines. Pieces were seen
to rip from the machine, which rolled
slowly, after which a wing enme off,
and, with tcrrific force the plane
crashed to the ground.
Funerals of Victims.
The funerals of three of the victims
will .take r-lq-e 'n Sidney this Thurs
day. The remains cf Squadron-Lea'aer*"
James N. Rainbow. Flying-Officer H.
T. Skiilmnn, and Filot-Gfficer B. M.
Sawyer will be cremated at the.- Ncrth
(rn Suburb:; Crematorium nt 4 P.m.
The remains of Pilot-Cfilcer J. I.
Newman will be despatched by train
at 3 p.m. to-day for interment at
Toowoomba <Q.>. The remains of Air
craftsman C. R. Tysoe will be sent to
Melbourne by train on Saturday for
interment at Geelong (Vic.).
