TRAFFIC ENTIRELY SUSPENDED
('SUNDAY TIMES' SPECIAL MESSAGE.)
MEDLOW, Saturday Night.
A remarkably heavy . downpour of rain
in this district has done considerable
damage, the principal so far reported
being a washaway of 220yds of the railway
embankment at Glenbrook.
iIn consequence of the destruction of the
permanent way, the train which left Med
low Baths at 6 o'clock was held up at
Springwood, and the train for the moun
tains, which left Sydney at 6.15 p.m. was
unable to proceed further than Glenbrook,
and will be delayed for many hours.
TRAFFIC STOPPED TWELVE HOURS.
Inquiries at Redfern station confirmed
our Medlow Baths message. The wash
away occurred at the Sydney end of the
Lapstone Tunnel this side of Glenbrook,
and the damage is so extensive that it
will take a big gang of men at least 12
hours to restore the line to a condition
to again carry the traffic.
Passengers for the city have been un
able to get beyond Glenbrook, and those
who intended to go to the mountains have
been compelled to return to Penrith or
Sydney.
It was reported last night that amongst
other damage done on the mountains was
the washing away of several orchards.
The rain was also very heavy about
midnight in the western suburbs.
Though the thunder and lightning were
pronounced for some hours, the rain did
not reach the city till about 12.30.
