Brick Supply at a Standstiix.
The building trade on the Mountains .
has received a severe blow in the an
nouncement from the Lithgow Valley
Colliery Compaii}' that they will be un
able to fill any more orders for the next
Five weeks, owing to the receipt of a
large order from the Government for
4,000,000 bricks to be delivered at once
on the railway deviation works. As

the Mountains, it will mean that a large
number of men connected with the build
ing trade will be thrown out of employ
ment for this period. The 'only orders
now being supplied are those received
prior to this large contract being entered
into. Experts are endeavoring to find
suitable clay for briclcmaking around
Katoomba and other Mountain centres,
and money is said to be available should
their efforts prove successful, and new
brickworks will be constructed. It is
needless to say that the energetic man
ager of the Lithgow Brickworks is doing
all in his power to cope with the situa
tion and to prevent the possibility of
such a state of things happening again.
The present output is 150,000 weekly,
and a new kiln, capable of holding'
100,000 bricks, is being erected and will
be available very shortly. When this is
completed it will ensure a constant sup- ?
ply for all coiners in the future, and
may possibly result in .bringing about a .,: ?
reduction in the price of bricks.
