SERVICES RECOGNISED.
During llie recent exceptionally heavy
rains an extensive washaway occurred on
the Great Western railway, near Glen-
brook. The result might have been' very
serious indeed but lor the promptitude
with which two brothers, Donald and Tho
mas Skarrett, acted. Going down to the
railway, they discovered the damage .that
had, been done, and while one went to no
tify the officials at Glenbrook platform,
the other proceeded in the opposite direc-
ection to warn the driver of a goods train .
which they knew was due in a few min-
utes. it is probable, but for the prompti-
tude with 'which they acted, the train
would have been wrecked. The Railway
'Commissioners have forwarded to each of
thie brothers ' a cheque for £25 in recogni
tion of the valuable services they rendered
to the department on the occasion.
