John William Berghofer. In 1892 he went to Little Hartley where he bought a property on which stood the old "Mt Victoria Inn", a strong two storey building with walls nearly two feet thick and fashioned in stone, built in 1839.
In memory of his old home back in Germany he renamed the property "Resenthal" (German for Valley of the Roses).

Mr J.W Berghofer, the first President of the Blaxland Shire (1906) led agitation for better grades on the road at Mt. Victoria Pass. In 1907 construction started on a deviation and was completed in 1912. This deviation had easier grades but sharper curves.
In 1920 Mt. Victoria Pass was again in use as cars now had more power and could climb the steep grades. For some time both roads were open, but in 1933-34 the Department of Main Roads improved the Mt Victoria Pass road and Berghofer Pass deviation was closed.
