GREAT STORM IN SYDNEY
EXTENSIVE DAMABE DONE.
SYDNEY, Monday.-A phenomenal fall of
rain, during tho progress of which a violent
thunderstorm took place,' occurred at mid-
night on Saturday, and continued .until
theearly hours of yesterday. At; .St.'
Mary's six inches was' registered within a
very short time.. Extensive' damage was
done at Glenbrook, .the first railway . sta-
tion on the Biue Mountains;' where por-
tions' of the permanent way were torn up,
while the violence of the wind bent and
snapped great trees. A serious washaway
occurred near the entrance..to the Lapstone
tunnel, and the railway traffic was suspen-
ded for a time.,' Lengths of rails' with slee-
pers attached were carried for a consider-
able distante. At Parramatta a wooden
bridge which spanned thc river was bodily,
carried away, and great damage done to
tho orchards. In many -'.places tho .storm
was accompanied by hail, '
Iii Sydney tho storm water sewers were
taxed to their utmost capacity. At 4. a.m.
the' electric current was affected by the
overflow, and the entire city was thrown
into darkness. In 'many of ' thc suburbs
the .streets were flooded, the waterways
running bankers. At Burwood and Ash-
field many fine garden's were practically
ruined. The storm" was not of long dura-
tion! but was of a very, violent character
while? it! lasted.
