DREADFUL CRASH
FIVE KILLED AT GLEN-
BROOK
WHEN R.A.A.F. 'PLANE DIVES
Four officers and one aircraftman
were killed when a Royal Australian
Air Force twin-engined aircraft
crashed near Glenbrook about 5 p.m.
yesterday; All were members of the
staff of the air navigation school at
Parkes, and two were Parkes resid
ents. ;
The aircraft, which left Parkes for
Mascot at 3.40 p.m., was - conveying
an officer to Sydney for- urgent spe
cialist medical attention. The' mach-
ine was in trouble before it reached
Glenbrook and the pilot was obvious
ly looking for a place to land. .
"Witnesses said that the aircraft
had begun to break up in' the air be
fore the crash.''
Soome residents said the . propellers
and portion of one of- the wings fell
off in the bush a few miles from
Glenbrook. A small portion of the
machine 'fell on to the property of
D. Jones, half a mile from. Glenbrook
railway station. ,One of the engines
fell out of the plane at a height of
less than 200 feet and crashed on to
the concrete footpath in Lucasville-
Road, and then ricocheted across the
road, striking an electric - light pole,
which was smashed. '
The bodies of the victims were
found some distance from the wreck
age. After the crash, the 'plane
burst into flames. Petrol stains
over a long tract suggested that one
of the tanks had been leaking for
some distance before the machine
Squadron-Leader Rainbow, a bro
ther Mr. A. E. Rainbow, the wel.-
known Sydney barrister, was a fre
quent visitor to Lithgow. Before
joining the R.A.A.F. he was a Mac-
quarie-street specialist. During the
time that Dr. John Malcolm practic-
ed In Lithgow, Squadron-Leader
Rainbow acted at his locum tenens
on one occasion. A younger brother
Is in the A.I.F. abroad.
