THE LAPST0NE TUNNEL.
DRIVER RENDERED UNCONSCIOUS.

Penrith. Wednesday. — Passengers by the special -
train leaving here about It this morniug had a lively
experience in Gtenbrook tunnel. Driver J. Willis
and Fireman T. Wright made three attempts to get
through, but without success, so backed the train nut
of I lie tunnel and took half of the carriages through
to Glenbrook. Wright was slightly scalded, whilst
Willis collapsed altogether, both being relieved from'
duty. The driver and fireman on an engine stand
ing at Glenbrook were sent back for 'the other
half of the train, and proceeded with the full (rain
on its journey. None of the passengers were hurt,
although many, especially ladies, must have gone
through a trying ordeal. First aid was rendered to
Willis at Glenbrook. and later on at Penrith, where
a medical man also attended him. who attributed tho
cause to hot air having got on his lungs. To-night
Willis recovered consciousness, but is very bad.
.Since the tunnel has been opened railway men have
had trying experiences through want of ventilation
passengers also suftering. In the hot weather stops
should be taken to remedy tbe evil - -
Inquiry at L.-kbank lailuay station yesterday
morning elicited facts similar to Ihc above The
ordinary passenger train, which should have reached
Lithgow at half- past three, got through the tunnel
alright, but was delayed the period mentioned owin
to the line not being clear. .Driver Willis is wolb
known among local railway men, and much sntisfnc-
t ion was expressed at his recovery.
