LAPSTONE TUNNEL.
"Meddler" writes :— The incident reported in
your issue of January 1, which may have re-
sulted in a terrible calamity, at the Lapstone
Tunnel, certainly calls for some speedy remedy,
otherwise, sooner or later, the travelling public
will be very dubious regarding railway excur-
sions on lines where long unventilated tunnels
exist ; or else there may be a rather long list
of claims for compensation. Surely through all
our long tunnels the trains could be run carriages
first, the engines being at the rear ; all the incon-
venience and danger would alike be avoided. I
merely make this simple suggestion in the in-
terest of all concerned, and knowing your wil-
lingness to give voice to any suggestion.
