Terrors of a Tunnel. ;
A telegram from Lithgow states :
In repard to the Lapstone tunnel, it is
stated that on a partioular goods-train
whiah recently had as its oomplement
about 40 truoks, and was being assisted
by a 'push-up' engine, tho rails
proved exceedingly slippery when
going through the tunnel, and tbe
wheels of the front engine refused to
' bite.' Sand from the Band-box was
constantly poured on to the rails, but
without tbo slightest effect. The hot
hot eteam exhausted quicker and
quiolter, and tho heat and Bmoko blew
down in overwhelming force upon the
ongino-drivors and firemen. Tho heat
and smoke at length booarno unondur*
able, and one of tho drivers shut off the
regulator, applied tho brakes, and got
down off tbo ongino as quiakly as
possible, gasping for air. His olotbos
wore limp with perspiration, and his
mouth dry and ocaldod. Tho Dromon
were in a similar position, all for a
timo boing in a state of oollapso. The
regulator having boon shut off and tbo
exhaust of steam ooasing, tho condition
of the air improvod within a very few
minutos, but whilo it Jastod the boat
and fumos, together with tbo smoko
and hot stoam, provod nlmost boyond
