Lapstone Hill Tunnel.
THE QUESTION OF VENTILATION.
(Br 'The Totjeist.') ''*'
The tunnel being constructed, and about com
pleted, and -which it is stated the first ' mail train
is to pass through on Sunday evening next, has
been Juade in order to avoid the Lapstone Hill
Ziz-zag.
The tunnel is about half-a-inile in length,
commencing at Lucasville, and terminating about
300 yards south of Glenbrook. \
The line of grade is the steepest of any in the
colony through a tunnel, and ia in the form of an
S. The grade is 1 in 33ft for the whole distance.
1 Passenger trains,' it is anticipated, will save
about a quarter of an hour by going through this
tunnel instead of going up the Zig-zag.
It is reported, however, that the air in this
tunnel is not sufficient to carry off the sinoko and
steam of the engine, and if two engines are
attached the effect tends to suffocation, as these
is no escape for the smoke and steam, there being
no central air shaft, which is necessitated more
particularly by the curves, which do not permit
a free draught or current to pass through this
adit.
If this report be correct, traffic should certainly
not be permitted pending a thorough trial and
investigation, in order that the alleged incon
venience may be removed. Tha remedy exists in
air shafts being put down, so that the smoke may
be driven through the tunnel or air shafts, or
both.
It is stated that certain special tourist trains
will travel over the Zig-zag as heretofore to afford
visitors an opportunity of seeing the grand views
obtainable therefrom of Emu Plains, also the
great piece of engineering skill adopted in ascend
ing the mountain.
This certainly is right and considerate of the
commissioners, and will no doubt be largely
availed of by tourists.
