Z19 | 0-6-0 | Beyer Peacock & Co 1761 of 1878 | Operational | Glenreagh Mountain Railway | 1919 has had an interesting and varied preservation career. She was one of the last steam locomotives in NSWGR service when finally retired from shunting duties (after some periods of storage) around 1972/3. 1919 was initially preserved for the Lachlan Vintage Village at Forbes, being plinthed as the gatekeeper in 1979 and later painted a gaudy sky blue livery with silver dome and chimney. It was acquired by the Dorrigo Steam Railway and Museum at the auction of LVV assets in November 1986 and road hauled to Dorrigo. 1919 later passed to the Glenreagh Mountain Railway and was transferred to Glenreagh for restoration in 2000, where restoration to operation was completed in July 2004. The GMR website includes a history of 1919 with many historical and restoration photos. 1919 regularly worked the Glenreagh - Dorrigo line during the 1950's and its return to service on this line is an excellent outcome for the GMR. This photo (and view 2, view 3) shows 1919 approaching Tallawudjah Creek on the GMR in January 2007. Here is a much earlier photograph (dated approximately 1972) showing 1919 on a tour train at Liverpool. (1) |

Z24 | 2-6-0 | Dubs & Co. 2631 of 1891 | Stored | DSR&M Dorrigo | The B55-class locomotives (later renamed the Z24 class) comprised 25 locomotives built by Dubs & Co of Scotland. Originally main-line freight locos, they eventually gravitated to secondary lines, and then shunting roles. Many were sold to private users including collieries and sand & gravel quarries. In 1964 loco 2408 was sold by the NSWGR to the Electricity Commission of NSW, who employed the engine for shunting the Bunnerong Powerhouse, Port Botany and where it became No.7, keeping company with sisters 2413, 2414 and 2423. The locomotive was later donated to the DSR&M, where it is now stored in black oil for weatherproofing, as seen in this photo of 24 January 2004. Here is a second photo kindly provided by Anthony Winstone which shows 2408 at Dorrigo on 24 September 2005. (I had incorrectly listed this loco as sister 2414 until March 2007.) |

Z24 | 2-6-0 | Dubs & Co. 2636 of 1891 | Stored | DSR&M Dorrigo | 2414 was acquired secondhand from the NSWGR in 1959 by the Electricity Commission of NSW for use shunting the Bunnerong Powerhouse, Port Botany where it became No.5. The locomotive was stopped in 1967 and became a parts donor for sister 2408, until the remains were donated to the DSR&M in 1975. 2414 is now stored at Dorrigo and painted in black oil for weatherproofing, as seen in this photograph of 24 January 2004. 2414 is missing its tender (a spare 24-class tender is stored at the NSWRTM Thirlmere), cab, and the pony truck (although the swing arm remains, and the DSR&M recovered a suitable wheelset from scrap at Chullora). Accordingly the major components not available are the cab (a relatively simple sheet metal fabrication) and the pony truck axlebox. (I had incorrectly listed this loco as sister 2408 until March 2007.) |

In 1985 this locomotive was transferred to Goulburn for display within the Goulburn Roundhouse. |

Z25 | 2-6-0 | Beyer Peacock & Co 2322 of 1884 | Stored | DSR&M Dorrigo | 2535 was sold by the NSWGR to AIS and was later plinthed by the company at Coniston. Unfortunately when being placed on the plinth the lifting chains were poorly placed under the locomotive, resulting in buckled running boards. 2535 was becoming derelict at Coniston and was under threat of scrapping until acquired by the DSR&M. It was transferred to Rhondda Colliery for storage from the mid-1970's to the mid 1980's, when it was moved by road to Dorrigo. This photo of 24 January 2004 shows 2535 (sans tender) stored at Dorrigo (the tender is also stored nearby) and the buckled running boards can clearly be seen. |

The overhaul was completed with 3237's return to steam in mid-2005. (1) This photograph is kindly provided by Scott Mitchell and shows 3237 in steam at Cowra on 3 October 2005. |

C35 | 4-6-0 | NSW Government Railways 118 of 1917 | Operational | Trainworks (formerly NSWRTM), Thirlmere | 3526 was transferred in steam to the NSWRTM in 1974 but was subsequently relegated to static display. In 1983 the boiler clothing was removed for assessment of the boiler, and in 1990 restoration to operation began in earnest. Completion was achieved in early 2004 after a government grant for new boiler tubes. (In approximately 1990 a spare 35-class boiler -tab 3514 -was also retrieved from static use at the old Eveleigh workshops and is now stored at the NSWRTM.) This photo shows 3526 at Thirlmere station during the NSWRTM Festival of Steam on 6 March 2005. |

C36 | 4-6-0 | Clyde Engineering 400 of 1927 | Display | Trainworks (formerly NSWRTM), Thirlmere | 3616 is unique as the only Australian steam loco fitted with a Giesl ejector, in which form it is preserved at the NSWRTM. 3616 had been statically displayed in lined green livery at the NSWRTM during the 1970's but had become faded and rust-streaked by 1988 when it was repainted in unlined black. Photography within the display hall at the NSWRTM is difficult but I was able to capture this photo of 6 March 2005. (The Giesl ejector is partially obscured by a weather cover, and the connecting rods have been removed.) Here is a further photo showing the tender builder's plate. |

C36 | 4-6-0 | Clyde Engineering 376 of 1926 | Operational | Trainworks (formerly NSWRTM), Thirlmere | 3642 received a heavy overhaul at Goulburn loco depot in approximately 1981 and was operable at the NSWRTM until the late 1990's. Since then 3642 has been displayed at the NSWRTM while awaiting funding for a tone-up overhaul. UPDATE: Funding for overhaul was announced in 2006 and restoration got underway during 2007, including the swap of old boiler 3646B for one f the spare 36-class boilers at Thirlmere. (1) This photo is kindly provided by Jason Smid and shows 3642 displayed at Central Station for the 150 years of NSW railways celebrations on 24 September 2005. Here is an earlier photo of mine which shows 3642 and 4201 at the NSWRTM gala weekend on a rainy March 1994 day. Funding for an overhaul of 3642 was recently announced and overhaul at the NSWRTM was due to commence in October 2006. UPDATE: 3642 was re-launched to traffic on 1 March 2008. |

D50 | 2-8-0 | Clyde Engineering 1 of 1907 | Stored | Broadmeadow roundhouse | 5096 is a saturated-steam locomotive, largely unmodified during its working life. 5096 was the first locomotive built by Clyde Engineering, Granville, NSW, and apparently selected for preservation on this basis. 5096 had been displayed in 'as withdrawn' condition at the NSWRTM until the early 1980's, when the boiler clothing was removed in order to prevent boiler decay. Some repainting was done in 1991 but 5096 is now stored away from public view (awaiting static restoration) in the workshop area, as seen in this photograph of 17 March 2003. (1) Update: 5096 has been moved from Thirlmere to storage at Broadmeadow Loco. 5096 was subsequently allocated to the Junee Roundhouse Museum but has not yet moved from Broadmeadow. |

D53 | 2-8-0 | Clyde Engineering 210 of 1916 | Static | Valley Heights Locomotive Depot Heritage Museum | 5461 was an operational exhibit at the NSWRTM during the 1970's and until 1985. It was transferred to Valley Heights (where apparently it had been allocated at one stage in its life) in 1996, coupled to a Wampu tender (ex-5595.) (1) This 1981 photo shows 5461 receiving a new roof in the yard at NSWRTM in 1981. UPDATE: 5461's old boiler lagging was removed by specialist contractors at Valley Heights during 2008. The boiler clothing has since been replaced and the locomotive has received a quality cosmetic restoration by the volunteers at Valley Heights. |

D58 | 4-8-2 | NSWGR Eveleigh & Cardiff Workshops | Components only | Trainworks (formerly NSWRTM), Thirlmere | The D-58 class was designed as an improved version of the earlier D-57 class, featuring 3 cylinders but using rack-and-pinion valve timing instead of Gresley conjugating valve gear. Today only a few components survive, but they make interesting artifacts showing aspects of steam locomotive construction. |

D59 | 2-8-2 | Baldwin Lima Hamilton 75571 of 1952 | Display | Goulburn Roundhouse | 5908 (together with 5916) remains in largely original oil-burning configuration. 5908 apparently survived during the early 1970's as a stationary boiler, and had been displayed at the NSWRTM in 'as received' condition until 1991 when it received a cosmetic repaint into basic black livery. 5908 has occasionally donated parts to its operable sister 5910. (1) This photo of 6 March 2005 shows 5908 at the NSWRTM Thirlmere; the green tint is due to green skylights in the roof above. 5908's old boiler lagging was removed by specialist contractors during 2008. UPDATE: 5908, 5916 & 3085 were relocated from NSWRTM Thirlmere to Goulburn Roundhouse on 27 November 2009. |

D59 | 2-8-2 | Baldwin Lima Hamilton 75573 of 1952 | Display | Trainworks (formerly NSWRTM), Thirlmere | 5910 was originally built as an oil burner, but later converted to coal firing by the NSWGR. 5910 received a comprehensive overhaul at the NSWRTM from 1981 to 1985, and was extensively used by the NSWRTM as a railtour locomotive until approx 1998 when it was withdrawn due to needed tone-up repairs. It is now on view in the display hall at the NSWRTM. A spare 59-class boiler is also stored at Thirlmere, and various parts have been borrowed from sisters 5908 and 5916 over the years to keep 5910 running. (1) |

5917 was originally built as an oil burner, but later converted to coal firing. 5917 was withdrawn by the NSWGR in August 1972 and subsequently preserved by the LVR. 5917 was operational during the 1980's but ran with a smaller 53-class turret tender by the late 1980's as its original tender required a new tank. Both loco and original tender underwent extensive overhaul at the LVR Cowra during the 1990's. UPDATE: 5917 and original tender were restored to operation at Cowra by September 2007. (1) This photo is kindly provided by Chris Stratton and shows 5917 (with 53-class tender) and 5367 hauling an LVR tour train near Holmwood on 13 April 1986. 5917 wore a green livery during the 1980's as seen in this photograph; this livery is attractive but not authentic as 59-class locos wore black livery on the NSWGR. (1) UPDATE: 5917 has been moved to Eveleigh and is currently on loan to 3801Ltd. As at August 2010 this locomotive is apparently withdrawn from traffic pending some boiler remediation. |
