bomber crashed at Glenbiook about
5 pm yesterday
Witnesses said that the aircraft had
begun to break up in the aii before the
accident

All were members of the staff of the Air
Navigation School at Parkes
The machine which left Parkes at 3:40
pm was conveving Pilot Officer Sawyer to
Sydncv for urgent medical attention. It was
to have landed at Mascot
Pilot Oflicer Newman was piloting the plane
Flying Offlcer Sktllman was the navigator ano
Aircraftman Tysoe the wireless operator.
PIECES FALL FrOM PLANE
Shortly after 4 30 pm it appearer over
Glenbiook and acccording to residents it
seemed to break up as it was flying over
the town Some residents told the police
last night that portion of one of the wings
fell off In the bush a few miles from Glen
brook but this carnot be confitmed until
the search is resumed at daybreak to-day
It is known thal small pieces of material
were falling fiom the plane at least a quarter
of a mile from where it crashed. Small
portions fell on to the property.of Mt D
Jones half a mlle from the Glenbrook rail-
way station
Residents said that shottly afterwoods the
plane appeared to be in extreme difficulties
It descended to alout °200 feet
When it was approaching Lucksville Road
and Clifton Avenue Glenbrook immediatelv
over Ihr home of the Clenbook station-
masteri Mr Shaw the engine, seemed to
be making strange noise.
The plane apeared to be descending over
my ground« sald Mr Shaw The noise then
suggested that It had been given full throttle
as if it was trying to make height This
atractcd my attention and pieces of the
plane then seemed to flying off in all direct-
tions
ENGINE FELL OUT
One of the engines fell out of the plant at
a height of less than 200 feet It crashed on to
the concrete footpath in Luckasville Road and
then rlcocheied across the road stricking an
electiic light pole which it smashed. Live
wires fell in the street sendlng out .showers
of sparks.
The engine then hurtled on into land
w hich was «tudded with trees. When the
plane crashed Mr H J Welford who lives
opposite and myself rushed to the scene
We reached then just as the plane burst
into flames
Mr Shaw said that he found the bodies ol
the victims some distance fiom the wreckage
Petrol stains over a long track suggested
that one of the tanks had been leaking for
some distance befoie the plane crashed
Mrs Shaw the wife of the statlonmastet
said that pieces of the plane appeared to be
flying, about like paper before it struck the
giound Other residents also said that the
plane had been breaking up Iong before it
crashed

Pilot Officer Sawjei was an Ameiican who
was sailing his .acht Henii°tta in Aus
ti allan waters when war was declared líe
enlisted in the RAAF in _U1\ 1940 and
was posted to the genenl lcconnaissanct
school at Laveiton (Vic) Later he com
pleted a navigating Instructors course and
was posted in Novembei last to Parkes a«
an Instructor
