POWER INTERRUPTIONS
ON MOUNTAINS
'Only co-operation by electricity con
sumers m'xAserVmgiiie regulations will re
duce the frequency and duration of blackouts
on the Blue Mountains/7 said the Chief Elec
trical Engineer (Mr. €. A. Strachan), last
Friday.
In an exclusive interview, Mr.
Strachan and his deputy (Mr.
D. Powell), told the 'Advertiser'
that blackouts throughout the
area are inevitable and will con
tinue through the winter. ...
The Chief Electrical Engineer
stated that the severity of black
outs experienced last week was
caused by a breakdown of a
major unit at Bunnerong. Four
sections on the Blue Mountains
were without power in one day
for periods ranging from one to
two hours.
When asked if the blackouts
were equally distributed over the
five sections of the Blue Moun
tains, Mr. Strachan explained
that the method adopted was par
ticularly designed to equalise the
inconvenience caused by power
restrictions and he referred to
records kept by his department
which revealed the extent of
blackouts in the five sections since
June 19.
They are as follows:
No- 1 Section. Blackheath and
Medlow Bath, 17! hours. '?
No. 2 Section. Bell, Mt. Vic
toria and Lawson west to Grose
Street, Leura, 18| hours.
No. 3 Section. Katoomba, i
south of railway line, bordered by:i
Katoomba Street, Waratah Street
and Cliff Drive on eastern -side, !
Jamieson Valley on south side,
Peckman Road, Catalina Park J
and Gundar Street on the west,
1 5 iiours.
No. 4 Section. Katoomba
north of railway line from West
Street to Mount Hay Road.
Lcura, south of railway line from
Lurline Street, bordered by Wara
tah Street, Katoomba, to GrQse
Street, Leura, and outlying dis
tricts from Katoomba Brickworks
to Katoomba Falls Kiosk via Nar
row Neck Road, 191 hours.
No. 5 Section. Lawson east to
Glenbrook, 14i hours.
Mr. Strachan went on to ex
plain that directions For power
I restrictions emanated from the
District Suoerintendant at Lith
gow (Mr. C Cowans), and die
Uouncil had no alternative other
than to blackout one or more
areas.
When the Council is in
structed to switch off its power
for a certain period, the rotation
system is then applied so that
each area is penalised in turn.
Unfortunately, some areas may
suffer a longer period than
others. However, it is anticipated
that the position will right itself
every two weeks.
