Bathurst Exporting
Bricks To Lithgow !
Bathurst brickworks was so overburdened with
orders that its output was to be increased from 36,000
to 80,000 bricks per week, Mr. Ivor Hector said yester
day. He also revealed that Bathurst bricks were being
"exported" to Lithgow.
Present demand for bricks was so
heavy that the kiln's capacity of
6000 per day was hopelessly inade
quate to cope with the mass of
orders on hand, Mr. Hector said.-
"I have just returned from Sydney
after purchasing a double brick
machine capable of producing a
maximum of 12,000 bricks per day,
which will boost the kiln's output up
to 18,000. per day.
"At "the moment we are supplying
a tremendous amount of bricks to
Sydney. Within the last month we
have sent about 50,000, and several
purchasers "have offered to take aa
rrianyas I can give them indefinitely.
VI made it clear to them that they
could have only what Bathurst and
other western centres do no want."
Among the centres to which
the kiln is supplying bricks aro
Lithgow, Orange, Katoomba,
Leura, ami Bit. Victoria.
.
Lithgow has bought 200,000
bricks in the last four months.
Bathurst's demand at the moment
was not very great, but was growing
as building operations began to get
back into stride after virtually be
ing at a standstill during wartime.
The kiln, which had already pro
vided 200,000 bricks- to the Homes for
the Aged project, would supply an
other 50,000 for the additional block
now to be constructed.
(It was stated that the reason for
closing down the Lithgow Valley
brickworks was to , enable the new
company at the Vale of Clwydd,
the Lithgow Brick Company, to
operate at full capacity throughout
the year and thus avert unemploy
ment. Obviously the briclcwroks at
the Vale of Clwydd cannot supply
Litligow's. needs in ordinary times,
let alone abnormal periods, as is the
case at present? Here is confirma-
tion from Bathurst. — Ed, L.M.),
