A New Industry.
A new industry, which bids fair to be a complete
success, has been started at Katoomba. Mr. Far-
rant, who was at one time foreman of the Eskbankk
brickworks, has leased a large piece of land from
Mr. O'Regan and has established brickworks on the
property. Mr. Farrant is an eminently practical
man, and thoroughly well up in his business, and
he assures us that he is able to make bricks of bet-
ter quality and at a less price than outside makers.
The ground on which the works have been com-
menced is one mass of pure white clay, with a strip-
ping of about a foot of black loam. The clay is
perfectly free from grit, and as rich as olenmarger
ine ; in fact the proprietor assures us that it is so
rich that he will have to work in a proportion of
sand with it. The drying yard is laid out near the
centre of the ground, and the whole place has been
cleared up and a kiln site selected, which will be at
once built upon. This industry is one that has
been greatly needed in Katoomba ; in fact we are
aware that in some cases the building of houses not
not been carried out by land owners in consequence
of the excessive cost of bricks when price, railway
freight and cartage. are considered, but this diffi-
culty will now be obviated, and Mr. Farrant's en-
ergy and enterprise should certainly receive that
acknowledgment from the public which he deserves
