ROBBERY AT ORANGE.
ORANGE, Tuesday Afternoon. — Mr. Bouffler,
council clerk of East Orange, found on his arrival
at the council chambers this morning that an en
trance had been forced during the night by bur*
glars, by wrenching the padlock off the outer door,
and that the iron safe in the office had been blown
opsn, apparently by dynamite inserted into the
keyhole, and the cashbox and coEtents (about £5)
stolen. Some of the office furniture was also de
stroyed by the explosion. The thief or thieve3

The Anvil Creek Colliery, Greta, is making luad
way, and more miners are being put on.
Mails dated London, March 1, per the P. and
O. R.M.S. Victoria, will be delivered in Sydney
this afternoon. ^
The new fire station at Ashfield will be tenanted
by the local volunteer fire brigade, under Captain
Lane. The .building is a handsome structure, of
red brick.
The Fire Brigades Board has formally taken
over the commodious new fire station at the cor
ner of Victoria and Norton streets, Ashfield. The
cost of the new station was £2000.
A meeting of citizens and members of Parlia
ment favorable to the immediate meeting of the
Parliament of the State of New South Wales will
be held at the Protestant Hall on Tuesday even
ing, April 9.
Sir George Turner, Federal Treasurer, says the
Barton Government will have a majority of 13
in the House of Representatives, and 4 in the
Senate. The Melbourne 'Age' gives Mr. Bar
ton a majority of 14 or 15 in the Lower House,
and 4 in the Senate.*
The Warrigal will sail for South Africa, with
the Sixth South Australian Contingent, on Thurs
day. On the previous day the men wiil parade
the streets of Adelaide, after which they will be
entertained at luncheon by the Government at
the Exhibition.
A man named William West, 44, residing at
Burren-street, Macdonaldtown, was admitted to
Prince Alfred Hospital on Monday, suffering
from a severe scalding. The injuries were
caused through an escape of steam and water
from a boiler.
A man named David Mitchell, boots at Carver's
Hotel, Moree, recently rushed at the licensee with
an axe raised. Mrs. Carver, an elderly lady, in
terfered and capsized Mitchell before the axe de
scended. The man was sentenced to two months'
hard labor at the police court
At the Newtown Police Court -on ? Monday,
James Smith, alias* 'Rag Hat,' 26, who was re
cently before the court in connection with a
robbery at the' Carlisle Hotel, Newtown. was
charged with indecent language and with three
assaults. He was found guilty on each charge,
and received in all sentences totalling seven
months and' twenty-one days, with hard labor.
The will of the late Mr. Chas. Carleton Skar
ratt, formerly of Summer Hill, Sydney, but later
of London, gentleman, has been lodged in the
Probate Office, Melbourne, for the purpose of be
ing sealed. Testator died in London on Novem
ber 23 last, having executed a will on December
22, 1897. He left in Victoria real estate valued at
£29, and personal, £5325, to his widow and child
ren.
At the annual meeting of the Liverpool District
Progress Association the election of officers for
the current year resulted as follows: — Mr. W. A.
